Complete Guide to Seosun-ra-gil (After visiting Changdeokgung Palace)

Running along the western wall of Jongmyo Shrine, Seo-Sunra-gil is a tranquil 800-meter stone-walled path named after the Joseon Dynasty’s police station.

It has recently emerged as a hot spot among the young generation, attracting attention for its unique charm, featuring traditional hanok houses renovated into cafes and workshops. On weekends, the street is car-free, allowing for a more leisurely stroll.

From a 50-year-old beauty salon to a trendy Mexican restaurant, Seosunragil offers a diverse range of experiences, making it a hidden gem in Seoul.

The History of the Stone Wall Road West of Jongmyo Shrine

The Stone Wall Road West of Jongmyo Shrine dates back to the palace security system of the Joseon Dynasty. Originally used as a patrol route by the Joseon Dynasty’s royal guards, the Sunragyeong (Patrol Corps), the guards regularly patrolled the area surrounding the palace and Jongmyo Shrine to ensure its safety. Jongmyo Shrine was built in 1394 when King Taejo moved the capital to Hanyang. It was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598) and rebuilt in 1608, along with the surrounding stone walls and patrol route.

During the Japanese colonial period, the original structure connecting Jongmyo Shrine and Changgyeonggung Palace was severed with the construction of Yulgok-ro. However, the Seoul Metropolitan Government recently completed a project to restore this historical disconnect by constructing an underground tunnel under Yulgok-ro and a pedestrian walkway above it. This reconnected Jongmyo Shrine and Changgyeonggung Palace after 90 years. This has shed new light on the historical significance of the patrol route used by the royal guards.

Why It’s a Hot Spot Loved by the Young Generation

The reason the younger generation is so enamored with Seosunragil is its “Instagrammable” sensibility and diversity.

The densely packed two-story buildings, restricted to the grounds below the Jongmyo Shrine wall to preserve the UNESCO World Heritage Site, create a relaxed atmosphere even in the city center. The sight of people leisurely gathering at tables and chairs along the street becomes a unique experience in itself.

The popularity of these establishments has grown to the point where long lines form even on weekday afternoons. The commercial district has experienced rapid growth, with average monthly sales projected to increase by 61% between 2019 and 2023.

Even more remarkable is the diverse mix of age groups, from women in their 20s to men in their 50s. A 50-year-old hair salon coexists with a trendy Mexican restaurant, while private craft studios specializing in metalwork, gardening, embroidery, and papermaking are nestled between the cafes, offering the added bonus of a bargain.

On weekends, the street is operated as a car-free zone from 10 AM to 6 PM, allowing for a more leisurely stroll. Word-of-mouth through social media has also exploded, with online mentions increasing by 1,130% after it was recently featured on a variety show.
